Women Lawyers Combating Digital Violence Raise Digital Rights Awareness Among 200 Women Across Four Governorates
From Building Lawyers’ Capacities to Empowering Women… Knowledge Becomes Protection
200 Women… Rights Awareness, Knowledge of Protection Measures, and a Step Toward a Safer Digital Space for Women
As part of its efforts to strengthen the protection of women from the risks of digital violence, the Network of Women Lawyers Against Digital Violence Against Women continued implementing its awareness-raising campaign, launched by the Waey Center for Human Rights Training under the theme “Towards a Safe Digital Space for Women.” The campaign included a series of awareness-raising lectures targeting women in local communities across the governorates of Amman, Irbid, Mafraq, and Zarqa.
Approximately 200 women benefited from the awareness-raising sessions on digital rights and digital literacy. The lectures focused on strengthening knowledge of rights in the digital space, empowering women to use technology safely, enhancing their capacity to prevent and address the risks of digital violence, and increasing their awareness of available protection measures, response mechanisms, and reporting channels.
The awareness-raising sessions were delivered by members of the Network, lawyers Susan Al-Tahan, Maram Maghalasa, Taghreed Brizat, and Sara Yamin. This initiative reflects the Network’s transition from building the capacity of women lawyers to putting these capacities into practice to serve the community, while sharing legal and technical knowledge with women.
Lawyer Taghreed Al-Daghmi, founder of the Network of Women Lawyers Against Digital Violence, emphasized that a lawyer’s role is not limited to defending women before the courts after violence has occurred, but also extends to prevention, awareness-raising, and empowerment. She noted that lawyers have an important role to play in the community by promoting legal and digital awareness and strengthening women’s capacity to protect and exercise their rights.
Al-Daghmi added that the “Women Lawyers Against Digital Violence” initiative is part of efforts to respond to the recommendations of the Universal Periodic Review (UPR) on human rights concerning efforts to combat violence against women, by strengthening community awareness, building the capacity of women lawyers, and supporting women’s access to justice.
For her part, Kholoud Shakakhowa, Director of the Danish Institute for Human Rights in Jordan, explained that the previous phase of the project focused on building the capacity of women lawyers in the areas of digital empowerment, digital security and safety, as well as advocacy and litigation skills in cases of digital violence. This contributed to preparing women lawyers with the knowledge and skills necessary to address such cases.
Shakakhowa emphasized that the Network of Women Lawyers represents a distinctive and pioneering experience in the region, by investing in the capacities of women lawyers and transferring their knowledge and expertise to women and local communities.
The launch of the campaign was attended by Mr. Karol Lemondin, Representative of the Danish Institute for Human Rights for the Middle East and North Africa region, as part of the Institute’s support for efforts to strengthen the protection of women from digital violence and raise awareness of digital rights, as well as prevention and protection measures.
These lectures form part of the Network’s efforts to expand its community impact and translate legal and technical knowledge into practical tools for prevention and protection. This is achieved by sharing the expertise acquired by the women lawyers with women across different governorates, contributing to the creation of a safer digital space and strengthening women’s capacity to protect and exercise their rights, while enabling them to respond to the risks of digital violence with greater awareness and confidence.
