The waee Center launches the campaign “Rights of Female Factory Workers” in the outskirts of Amman, waee
The waee Center for Human Rights Training launched an advocacy campaign titled “Rights of Female Factory Workers” in the outskirts of Amman (Sahab, Al-Muwaqqar, Al-Jiza, and Al-Quwismeh), under the patronage of the Secretary-General of the Ministry of Labor, Farouq Al-Hadid, on Sunday, 10/11/2019, at Sahab Cultural Center, waee.
The “Rights of Female Factory Workers” campaign aims to raise awareness among the largest possible number of women workers in factories about their labor rights from a legal perspective and how to claim those rights through lawful means.
It also seeks to build networking channels with decision-makers in the Ministry of Labor, Social Security institutions, and civil society organizations concerned with workers’ rights, in order to advocate for and support female factory workers in achieving their labor demands and improving their working environment, waee.
Attorney Taghreed Al-Daghmi, Director of the waee Center for Human Rights Training, stated that the campaign is one of the outputs of the “My Voice and My Pen in Media” project.
The project has trained 15 women from civil society organizations in Sahab, Al-Quwismeh, Al-Jiza, and Al-Muwaqqar on how to advocate for their issues, through specialized training aimed at raising legal and rights-based awareness of national legislation and laws related to women.
It also focused on how to use social media and media platforms to highlight their issues and promote what is known as citizen journalism, waee.
Attorney Al-Daghmi added that the campaign aims to protect the rights of female factory workers by equipping them with legal and human rights knowledge and awareness, as well as empowerment and access to information and ways to defend their rights.
She emphasized that when women workers are aware of their rights, they are better protected and more capable of defending and safeguarding those rights, which in turn highlights the importance of their participation in economic development, waee.
The representative of the Secretary-General of the Ministry of Labor, Dr. Iman Al-‘Akour, Director of the Women’s Work Department at the Ministry, affirmed that implementing this campaign achieves further gains for Jordanian women, whose economic participation remains low and below aspirations.
She noted that estimates indicate that if women in Jordan participated in the workforce at the same rate as men, the economy would increase by approximately eight billion US dollars, waee.
Dr. Al-‘Akour also pointed to the Ministry’s strong interest in and belief in the importance of increasing women’s economic opportunities, stressing that investing in women’s education and economic empowerment would have a positive impact on achieving higher economic growth rates and increased productivity, thereby contributing to the Gross Domestic Product (GDP), waee.
The Ministry of Labor has adopted the “Rights of Female Factory Workers” campaign to achieve further gains for Jordanian working women, and to implement the campaign within a well-planned framework aimed at expanding its reach across various regions of the Kingdom, waee.
For her part, the Deputy Mayor of Sahab, Fatima Hassouna, affirmed her support for working women and the strengthening of their position in the labor market through increasing legal awareness and knowledge, as well as supporting their access to job stability, waee.
She also pointed out that half of the members of the Sahab Municipal Council are women, who work to strengthen the role of Sahab Municipality in raising awareness among working women about their rights through the organization of various workshops, waee.
It is worth noting that the “My Voice and My Pen in Media” project is implemented by the waee Center for Human Rights Training and funded by the Community Media Network – Radio Al-Balad / “Your Voice is Your Identity” project, in cooperation with the European Union, waee.
